Tahau of Waipahihi, Lake Taupo (Mid
1870's) The patu (stone hand club) that chief Tahau (1st born?) holds is possibly the same one with which he is said to have executed many prisoners taken in battle. Two children look on from inside the whare. This East Taupo chief was captured at the Omarunui engagement, near Napier, in 1866. Tahau escaped from Chatham Island in the schooner Rifleman, and was with Te Kooti (top) in all the fighting until the early part of 1870. He was described as a most savage and ruthless warrior.

Photographer unknown. Note the carving to the right which may identify the tribe and area. It looks like a bird or lizard's head at the bottom of the carving. Note the storehouse is on legs and the person is kneeling. What an awesome photo for over 100 years ago!
